Citysearch to Acquire Insider Pages
IAC/InterActiveCorp, parent to Ask.com and Citysearch, announced plans to acquire reviews-based local search provider Insider Pages. IAC is not sharing the details, but TechCrunch puts the purchase price at $13 million, which should cover the $10 million VCs have invested in the company.
Insider Pages has been struggling to compete in the competitive local search space, and a sale had been rumored for some time, amidst layoffs and dwindling traffic.
Insider Pages has about 600,000 user reviews, which will be integrated into the Citysearch’s offering, as well as 2.5 million monthly unique readers, based on Comscore and internal tracking numbers, according to

Boogybonbon on hacker hit list?
Yep.. After I logged off at 3am today Mr XXX used a WordPress exploit to update the post and some templates… Joy! Needless to say I had to rollback the website and then upgrade WordPress, and let out the hounds.
If you would like to see what the “hacker” had to say, as well as who else is on his hit list. Checkout the snapshop that I sent to G-man while the box was being rolled back.

Are you a linkoholic?
Since the inception of Google and the birth of SEO, our industry has turned into what one may call a linkoholic industry. From the first days of trading links, to the current day of link baiting we have quickly turned our heads away from quality and more to where will we get our next fix for links.
If we are not trying to make some stunt to climb the ranks of Digg, we are posting videos to YouTube, or in some cases using dark methods to plant links on other websites.
Without question we have created a society that craves links so much that we will go to any extreme to acquire them. Even if it includes hard time!
In the near future we will start seeing linkoholic support sites like text-link-ads.com and linkworth.com offer wider array of linkoholic services to the millions of link addicts that are looking for their next high.
As a linkoholic what is your favorite flavor of link to drink?

Wikipedia External links in articles
Wikipedia External links in articles are now “nofollow”!
As of Jan 20th-23rd Wikipedia is adding nofollow to all their external links in the hopes of cutting down on the amount of link spam they get from the SEO industry.
“I would like to point out that this doesn’t mater, google gets to decide if they run this site with no follow or not. It would be trivial for google to add a line of code that says to follow wikipedia links regardless of nofollow, just as they may very well have been nofollowing our site for a while now.
Google (and the other search engines) can do whatever they want with our site regardless of what we have codded in there. Just given the huge size of wikipedia alone, I can guarantee all of the major search engines have had custom ways of dealing with anything that comes out of this url. In all honesty this is out of our hands at this point.”
.
I wonder if people are going to start putting nofol

Overture Keyword Research Is Dead!
Yahoo has officially closed its doors on their free keyword research tool!
Some people have written Yahoo to find out what is going on and if they do expect it to return. Yahoo and responded with this message:
”This tool is no longer being supported. When you are upgraded to the New Search Marketing system you will haveaccess to the Keyword Research Tool which works a lot betterthen the Keyword Selector Tool. The Keyword Selector Toolwas bringing up information on specific position data, andthis will no longer be relevant to the new ranking model.”
Word on the street is that it will come back later on this year, but it is going to change to be more like Google’s keyword research tool. This means no more numeric data and only little graphic icons to give you an idea if the keyword is popular and has a lot of competition.
This is really not a shocker as there have been a lot of keyword tools that leached off of their tool

Yahoo link baiting?
Who is not about link baiting now of days? Just last week Yahoo shutdown their keyword tool for a while and announced that they would be bringing it back later on in the year with some new formatting and services, but mysteriously it starting working just a couple days later.
Maybe Yahoo made a fumble and decided to bring it back online after the SEO community started panicking over the loss of their free keyword tool. However it is historically proven that service outages can create large amount of talk and in some cases links.
In most cases, no company ever wants to have an outage of their online services, however in Yahoo’s case it has proved to be a great marketing ploy, and has got everyone thinking about Yahoo’s keyword tool.
Since they have so many services, something like the keyword tool being shutdown would hardly grab headlines in the off line word, but in our world of SEO and SEM it’s a five start marketing maneuver that served them well.

The future of the internet is at hand!
Over the years we have watched the internet grow from just a small city to being its very own universe with online lives, jobs, and addictions.
As like any other investment minded individual, I am always looking at the future of the industry, to try and see what may be coming around the corner.
Within the last couple years we have seen a large jump in mobile technology, along with a fast growing interest in the development community for online applications that are at your disposal at all times.
What this really means, is the industry is looking for ways to develop services that you can take with you in any format. Even Google has developed a calendar that you can take on the road or use it in your office, and I have also seen some development in internet based Microsoft Word.
The mobile office, and life style is coming as companies find ways to allow you not just to store your applications and data on a device, but have access to them via the interne

Did Wikipedia Destabilize Google?
Recently Wikipedia added the nofollow value to all external links on it’s site. At first glance you may not have been concerned about it, if you did not have any links from Wikipedia and if you did, it probably did not spark too much of a concern as it was just a link or two.
Since the time I first reported that Wikipedia was planning on adding the nofollow value I have started to notice a shift in the serps that are a little out of the norm, and a sudden growth in link buying from top competitors.
Many of the old-boy sites have started buying handfuls of links from high-ranking sites, which they normally never did in the past in such large quantities.
What makes it really interesting is right before this even, Wikipedia added the nofollow and most of these sites started moving around the serps from their normal solid ranking at number one or two.
Looking ba

Making the Transition from Bloglines
Making the Transition from Bloglines to Google Reader
It is Finally done. After reading the post on Bloglines and Google Reader from Lifehacker, I’ve decided to make the transition. Thanks to a tip from a while back, I was able to export my Bloglines subscriptions as an OPML file and import them straight into Google Reader.
So far I’m very impressed with the change and am glad I’ve made the transitions. Bloglines is simply becoming outdated. Lack of new features is making it unattractive, at least to me and I think Google is doing a very nice job teasing us with small new addition

Goolge Aquires YouTube for $1.65B in Stock
I’ve read about the rumors a week or so ago in the Wall Street Journal and as of yesterday, media was buzzing with the news of the new aquisition (Washington Post, Salon, etc.). Google has finally issued an official press release focusing on the details of the aquisition and possible future plans.
Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) announced today that it has agreed to acquire YouTube, the consumer media company for people to watch and share original videos through a Web experience, for $1.65 billion in a stock-for-stock transaction. Following the acquisition, YouTube will operate independently to preserve its successful brand and passionate community.
I am very excited of the new opportunities for YouTube that this aqquisition can bring about. Eric Schmidt is right to notice that the platform already exists, it is only a matter of playing around with it just enough to make it accessi

Tailrank 2.0 is Out
I love Tailrank and find it convenient to track the latest Blogosphere buzz via Google Reader. Today I was pleasantly surprised that Tailrank launched a new version 2.0.
The greatest addition, in my opinion, is the “archive” feature that allows users to track what bloggers were talking about in the past rather than right now.
Surprisingly, Tailrank is not only a one-year-old company, it is also a tiny one. Made up of only founder Kevin Burton and four part-time contributors, it has launched past its competitors, TechMeme and Megite.
In the past, Blog SEO has experienced some reasonable Tailrank-sent traffic whenever I blogged about a popular issue or and event. I am not quite sure how the ranking algorithm works, but

Google’s Website Optimizer Tool
You can now sign up for Beta accounts of Google Website Optimizer. Google’s new tool allows you to track performance of your landing pages, i.e. those pages that users reach when they click on AdWords links.
Although I have a lot of experience with landing pages optimization, I have never used one for my own ventures, but I can appreciate the value of this free tool.
I think that if nothing else, Google Website Optimizer can save lots of time and give a nice at-a-glance perspective of your marketing campaign.
