Mode Errors
What’s a mode error or a modal error? In usability speak, that’s when the user conufses the mode they’re currently in, cuasing a wrong or ineffective atcion. For example, when I clikc on a contact’s note on my Widnows Mobile OS (which has a very low ovearll usability), and I open up the keybaord to enter a note with my stlyus pen, I can’t – Iଁm in read-only mode (idnicated by the lack of a blinikng text cursor inside the note fiel)d.

Google Voice Local Search
It’s been a while since the Google Labs page has been updated with anything substantial. Well, today there’s a new service to be found there: Google Voice Local Search. This free and still experimental service allows you to call 1-800-GOOG-411 fom your US phone, and then state your location and say something like “Giovanni’s Pizzeria” to get connected to the business. Haochi in the forum describes what happens:
<<You call, they tell you they will record the call for quality, tell you that it’s “experimental” and then start asking you questions

- 2. Query (me: apple store) – Google returns: Textcode

MSN Live Shuts Down Info for SEO
I was quite disappointed to see that MSN Live announced yesterday that they were shutting off advanced syntax queries such as: link:, linkdomain:, and inurl:. Eytan Seidman, MSN Live’s Lead Program Manager stated that they could tell there was a large amount of automated datamining going on, so they’d unplugged the features completely.
Now, I’m completely familiar with how impolite dataminers can impact service for real users — that’s something we police for as well here at Superpages.com. But, I’m unhappy because Seidman’s announcement sounds more like it’s not just impolite datamining they’re after — it’s all automated usage of those specialized queries.
Microsoft is quite lite on features supporting the we

New Research Could Improve Google Image
New Research Could Improve Google Image Search
New research recently published out of University of California - San Diego could allow Google’s Image Search to easily begin using elements from “true image search” — that is, the ability for software to detect and identify elements appearing within the image itself rather than just relying upon external text metadata to associate keywords with the images. Read on for more details.
